Camden, Maine — Lyman-Morse yacht broker and seasoned offshore sailor Ronnie Simpson has launched a new campaign to compete in the 2027-28 edition of the Global Solo Challenge — a singlehanded, non-stop, around-the-world sailing race beginning and ending in Vigo, Spain. Following a determined performance in the 2023-24 edition, in which he sailed more than 20,000 miles and rounded all three great capes before a dismasting forced his retirement, Simpson returns with renewed focus and a new vessel: the Class 40 Koloa Maoli.
A U.S. Marine Corps veteran and professional sailor with over 175,000 offshore miles, Ronnie is now
preparing his new platform with support from Maine Yacht Center and the broader sailing community. After launching Koloa Maoli in late June, he and his team completed sea trials off the coast of Portland, Maine. “Koloa Maoli is strong, well-prepared, and uniquely suited for this race”, said Simpson. “I’m excited to be representing Maine — and Lyman-Morse — on the global stage.”
In addition to his work as a yacht broker at Lyman-Morse, Simpson is a licensed captain and longtime advocate for veterans in sailing. His upcoming campaign includes racing in the Monhegan Island Race this August, followed by a Maine-to-Mid-Atlantic tour to build awareness and sponsorship opportunities for the Global Solo Challenge.
With the 2027 start line in view, Simpson is actively seeking commercial partners to help support the journey from Portland to Cape Horn — and back again.
