Summer 2021 has been an active time at Lyman-Morse’s inner harbor boatyard improvements project, with sitework, foundations, and utilities dominating the site on Camden Harbor. Crews have been working hard to keep the Camden boatyard improvements on schedule and allow the rebuilding of the company’s facilities to be complete by summer 2022. Foundations, utility lines, and other in-ground work are expected to be finished in September. Lyman-Morse’s construction manager, Lajoie Bros. of Augusta, is now turning its attention to erecting the walls, roof, and other structural elements that will comprise the new 33,000-square-foot marine service complex.
Late spring saw a team on-site from H.B. Fleming, Inc., of South Portland, driving the steel pilings that were necessary to securely support the buildings’ footings and foundation walls for decades to come. As the pile-driving team progressed from north to south across the site, Lajoie’s crew of expert concrete workers began pouring the pile caps and grade beams upon which the buildings will stand. While still conforming to height restrictions dictated by Camden’s zoning ordinance, all structures have been raised above the floodplain to address the impacts of sea level rise and climate change. Sitework, including the installation of a brand-new concrete retaining wall that replaced a failing wooden one and an access road along the east side of the site, was completed by Crooker Construction, of Topsham.
Work in August includes the delivery of structural steel that will form the skeleton of the new shoreside complex, as well as the panels that comprise the more than 12,000-square-foot building housing Lyman-Morse’s new rigging building, mechanics and carpentry shops, and marine electronics department. The Lajoie crew and a team from American Aerial Services, Inc., of Falmouth, expect to have this structure erected by late September and will then proceed toward closing in the spaces that will house the Lyman-Morse administration offices, tenant spaces, as well as the restaurant and Blue Barren Distillery.
When completed in 2022, Lyman-Morse’s inner harbor boatyard improvements project will be a 21st century example of modern, viable, working waterfront. For more information about the project, click here.
