Lyman Morse Through the Years

We were more than a little excited about the opportunity to improve on a great boat. Purchased while under construction from the Noyes estate, and launched more than ten years ago, TUMBLEHOME has become one of the most utilized yachts we have ever built. She has made countless runs in all weather conditions between Miami and the Bahamas and longer excursions into the Caribbean. The owner used her for diving, cruising, fishing and as the occasional entertainment platform.

Maintained in top-notch condition, but like all things, there was always another thought of how to build a...(Read More)

After seeing ANNIE ROSE at the boat show in Rockland, Maine in August, 2005, Bob Gunn and his wife, Marianne, stopped by the yard for a tour. Things progressed quickly and they decided to build hull number 3 of this fantastic jetboat series from the design boards of Chuck Paine/Mark Fitzgerald. AUJOURD'HUI is a combination of the ideas from the first two boats as well as the owner's great additions. She sports an accentuated torpedo style stern with greater tumblehome than either of the two previous boats. Her full mahogany interior is showcased with an etched...(Read More)

Launched August 2006, this light-weight, custom racer-cruiser is something that we had wanted to build for many years. With our continuing advancements in technology, we are one of the few that have mastered the SCRIMP process using carbon fiber and epoxy and we were ready for this fantastic craft. Designed by the innovative west coast firm Reichel/Pugh, BARAKA is capable of going anywhere fast. A truly modern cruising boat, BARAKA is equipped with an elaborate hydraulic system set up for shorthanded sailing so her owner can take her on extended cruises by himself or with a very small crew. Michael Porter came to us as the designer of this wonderful, long-range voyager that he and his wife wanted for cruising the waters of Maine to the Caribbean as well as the canals and rivers of Europe. The key element of his dream was to build a boat (and home) that would carry them safely, and with reasonable dispatch, wherever they wanted to go on the oceans of the world and allow them to live and work aboard without major readjustments. He turned to us to build his custom aluminum, long-range, "live-anywhere" cruiser, one that would fit within the draft,...(Read More)

One of my customers from several years ago -- when I was at Dodson Boatyard in Stonington, CT -- visited me at Lyman-Morse during the summer of 2003. It was great to catch up with such a good customer. As conversation developed over the year, he became increasingly interested in the new 38' Chuck Paine/Mark Fitzgerald jet boat project we were building called ANNIE ROSE. We continued our thoughts and plans for almost a year. After I took him out on a spin on the 38 jet that was nearing completion, he was satisfied he had found the performance he...(Read More)

We built this 58' Steadysailer for Craig Stevens. She was the first aluminum yacht to be totally constructed under our supervision at our 12,7500 sq ft Lyman Morse Metal Fabrication facility located a short distance from our main yard. (Read more about LM Metal Fabrication here.)

We launched ANNIE ROSE in the fog and mist of an early spring day in April 2005, just as scheduled. After an few additional weeks of refinements and final preparations at Lyman-Morse, she moved on to her summertime homeport of Pemaquid, Maine. This new 38' jet boat we built for Chip and Annie Williams is a real beauty! After talking with Chuck Paine and Mark Fitzgerald of C.W. Paine Yacht Design for several years, we developed a stylish, single jet cruiser which would be available from us on a semi-custom basis. The main focus was on a sea-kindly,...(Read More)

We are excited about our newest, larger version of the popular MAGPIE from the Setzer Design Group. She boat is 6 1/2 feet longer and 1 1/2 feet wider than MAGPIE. This new length is most evident in the pilothouse area which is longer and affords a raised outside seating area aft of the pilothouse and above the cockpit. The twin forward cabins have been replaced with one large cabin allowing a queen sized bed athwartships. This new configuration will give her three staterooms and three heads. The interior joinery is similar to MAGPIE's book matched veneers and custom inlays....(Read More)

We launched the new yard utility boat early in 2004, built with the idea of towing and lugging lumber, dinghies and equipment. She is a great ride as all our 30's are. We simply swapped the engine and the fuel tank positions, allowing the engine to be placed under the center console. The entire console lifts on an electric actuator (very fancy) to provide total access to the engine. The first runs, although very cold were flawless. (Yes, that's snow on the shore behind us!) We have already put her to use towing floats around and commissioning moorings. The jet...(Read More)

We delivered Boyden Gray's, RICHARD HENDERSON -- named after one of his ancestors -- in August 2003. Boyden came to us through one of our good customers, Christopher Makins who knew that the Grays was searching for just the right boat to do some fast day-boating and realized, like many of us do, that living in Maine is only accentuated when one is able to do some exploring among the thousands of islands and rivers that make up our coast. Our jet boat family continues to grow to five with the addition of Ted Irving's new boat, CATHIE ANN, which was built alongside Tom Glenn's 30' Jet, Tomahawk. Having the two boats built at about the same pace, and with the same layouts, was as close to production as this shop ever gets. The Irving's boat is dark blue with a Yanmar 370hp engine. We expect this boat will attain the same acceleration as Rumble with her Cummins 370. They wanted their boat to be finished off in a special way and felt that only a custom builder could accomplish their goal. They wanted the interior to be a warm cherry. He watched as we completed RUMBLE last summer, and when we started HALCYONE, he liked her new exterior look. Magpie

MAGPIE is the most detail oriented boat we have ever built at Lyman Morse. We had some general parameters that were difficult to achieve as they were conflicting. The priority was in the joiner work and that it be the best we could provide as well as an engineering marvel with all the equipment a larger boat will have. The dilemma we had was to achieve a targeted speed of 34 knots which is only possible if the weight was kept low. On launching day we knew our engineering was the best, our joiner work had...(Read More)
