Summary
Magpie is the most detail-oriented boat we have ever built at Lyman-Morse. We had some general parameters that were difficult to achieve, as they were conflicting. The priority was in the joiner work and that it be the best we could provide as well as an engineering marvel with all the equipment a larger boat will have. The dilemma we had was to achieve a targeted speed of 34 knots which is only possible if the weight was kept low.
On launching day we knew our engineering was the best, our joiner work had reached new heights in sophistication, but we were worried about the weight even though we had gone to great lengths to keep the boat light. Cored bulkheads, honeycomb granite countertops, very light cored panels everywhere all helped, but an extraordinary amount of board feet of specially picked Mahogany also had to go into the boat. The amount of wire alone would sink a normal battleship.
Everyone was all smiles as she floated on her lines and we roared down the river at 34.4 knots. The 1300 HP MAN’s just humming! Magpie is an unusual blend of old and new and is striking outside as well as the interior with a theme of mahogany in a turn of the century styling particularly recalling the historical aspects of wooden sailboats and classic motor yachts of the 20’s and 30’s. In coordination with designer Ward Setzer, we achieved a classic for years to come.
