We have a rich history of building boats with Chris Hood, and together we’ve created the popular Hood 35 LM and the inspiring Hood 57 LM, yachts that are as well-designed, well-built, and well-loved as any afloat. And now, we’re proud to announce the Hood 42 LM, a new flybridge cruiser from Lyman-Morse and C.W. Hood Yachts.
The Hood 42 LM carries the unmistakable profile that has become synonymous with New England boating. Inspired by the classic designs that have graced the region for generations, her graceful sheer, varnished mahogany house sides, bronze bow rail, and elegant proportions evoke a timeless era of yachting. Yet beneath her traditional appearance lies thoroughly modern engineering.
From the sculpted profile to the perfectly proportioned cabin house finished in flawless varnish, the Hood 42 LM rewards a longer gaze. The brightwork flows seamlessly into meticulously executed joinery, while custom bronze hardware and hand-finished details reveal themselves one thoughtful element at a time. Every surface reflects the patience of artisans who understand that true luxury is quietly experienced.
Constructed using Lyman-Morse’s cold-molded composite process, the yacht combines Douglas Fir and Western Red Cedar with advanced composite laminates to create a structure that is exceptionally strong, light, and remarkably quiet underway. Twin Volvo Penta 440-horsepower with DPS drives deliver responsive handling, joystick maneuverability, excellent fuel efficiency, and a cruising speed in the mid-30-knot range. The juxtaposition of tradition and technology is intentional. Hidden beneath her timeless profile is contemporary engineering that delivers the confidence, ride, and refinement that today’s owners expect, while preserving every ounce of her classic character.
Hull No. 1 of the Hood 42 LM demonstrates just how personalized each series-built yacht can become. Examples include a hideaway electronics console at the lower helm or custom-forged bronze fittings designed exclusively to secure fenders while blending seamlessly in with the 42’s profile. Similarly, a carbon-fiber companionway door is wrapped in perfectly varnished veneers with a counter-balanced drop window and screen. Even the salon side and aft windows electrically lower and raise, while integrated screens deploy effortlessly. The spruce and teak ladder from the cockpit to the flybridge is shaped for both easy access and to complement the exterior profile. Individually, each detail is impressive. Collectively, they reveal the obsessive pursuit of refinement that defined the entire build process.
The Hood 42 LM features a lower cabin with large owner’s stateroom, enclosed shower and head, and plenty of storage. The main deck features a single-level open living and entertaining space that combines the lower helm, galley, and salon. The space is open, airy, and full of natural light and ventilation thanks to plenty of thoughtfully placed power windows, with the galley to port and a large settee and table to starboard.
Her flybridge gives the helmsman a commanding view, with 360-degree sightlines, perfect for close quarters maneuvering or just taking in the scenery. Power for the Hood 42 LM comes from twin Volvo DPS drives that will provide her with a comfortable cruise in the mid 30-knot range.
Some of the highlights of this build:
- West System cold molded hull, using alternating layers of Douglas fir and cedar, sheathed in epoxy and e-glass.
- Damping tiles throughout the interior and hull to reduce wave slap noise.
- Extensive Soundown insulation package lining the engine and systems room spaces.
- An “integral” charging system on both engines enabling a quick charge of lithium-ION battery bank to run systems and air condition at night silently with no generator!
- The lower helm drops away under a lid when not in use for a clean look.
- All hardware is brass or bronze on the interior and exterior. When not available, we designed and custom cast as needed.
- Helmsman bench seat slides for and aft on custom brass hardware.
- Six pilot house windows are powered and fully retractable, opening up the entire saloon to the outdoors. A custom entry door includes a counterbalance window; all openings have custom retractable roll up screens.
- Interior and exterior soft goods of tufted leather upholstery made beautifully by Alfred’s Upholstery in Maine.
- All exterior mahogany was stained to match the owner’s existing sailboat topped off with 15 coats Epifanes varnish. All interior mahogany was fit, stained, varnished, fit, varnished and assembled. A labor-intensive process with remarkable results.
