Summary

Whistler is a C. Raymond Hunt-designed, and Lyman-Morse-built, 54′ twin jet express cruiser with 30 knot cruise speed. Built for an owner with impeccable taste, she is a fine representation of the craftsmanship for which we are recognized. Not only does she boast the finest in interior detailing, she also features advanced mechanical systems. Perhaps one of the most exciting features of Whistler is her dinghy “garage.” The hydraulic gate and sled which extend out over the jets allow the owner to launch the 10′ tender from the interior storage compartment with the push of a button. Powered by twin 1001 hp Caterpillar C-18s coupled with Hamilton HJ403 water-jets, Whistler will cruise in the low 30s with a max speed of 35 knots.

LAYOUT & DESIGN

TRANSOM GARAGE

The moon-shaped teak centered transom swim platform measures 3′ at its narrowest. There are three steps on the port and starboard sides to the raised cockpit. The control for the hydraulic garage is on the side of the starboard steps and the fresh water hot/cold hand-held shower is on the side of the port steps.

The garage is 39″ in height by 6′ wide and 13′ deep. The door opens aft and then articulates up allowing for the tender to be automatically pulled in and pulled out of the garage. A fire extinguisher and fresh and saltwater wash-downs are at the ready as needed.

COCKPIT

This teak deck extends fore and aft 6 feet and port-to-starboard 13’8″. The cockpit cushioned aft bench seats four comfortably with a composite top dining table. The aft-facing portside bench seats two and has a storage compartment for cleaning supplies. The starboard side features a grille with custom stainless top and ice maker.

The cockpit deck features 3-large locking hatches to provide access to the garage and the port and starboard side exhaust, tankage, bike storage and miscellaneous supplies.

There are two carbon fiber port and starboard awning poles that allow the custom sun canvas to be extended aft over all cockpit seating.

HULL AND DECK

WHISTLER has a Kingston Gray AWL-GRIP hull with a Graystone AWL-GRIP and Off-White AWL-GRIP coach combination.

The sidedeck going forward is AWL-GRIP non-skid 16″ at its narrowest and has surface lighting. The recessed hand hold rail and secure boat hook storage are found above recessed and under the curved-down cabin-top.

The aft and forward dock-line tie-ins are handled by 12″ cleats and the spring-line mid-ship cleats are 10″ cleats. All-around safety is provided by custom 1″ polished stainless steel guardrails that are 25″ above the 8″ gunnels for maximum safety.

The foredeck is well-spaced and well thought-out. The MAXWELL 2500 windlass handles the 100′ feet of 3/8 chain and 200′ of nylon rode. The two below deck secured hatches have ample storage for fenders, spare anchor, wash down hoses for the fresh water and salt water hook-ups.

SALON CABIN TOP

The clean, low-profile fixtures on this cabin top provide a well balanced look that aides servicing and function. The antenna mast is 45″ off the deck by 39″ wide and holds masthead light, anchor light, 2- VHF antenna’s, a SIRIUS Galaxy antenna, RAYMARINE R5150 antenna’s and the 50″ open array RAYMARINE radar. Flat mounted on the hard-top are the ACR EPIRB, 4-person VIKING life raft, 2-20″ trumpet horns, loudhailer, dual beam auto spotlight, port and starboard running lights and two satellite domes.

There are two evenly spaced 25″ square tinted air inlet hatches that are easily adjusted from inside the cabin’s navigator and helm stations.

SALON

The threshold entry through the sliding IMRON painted stainless steel door and a 4″ step down lands you onto beautiful 3″ wide maple cabin sole with a standing height of 6’8″. Directly to port is the Birdseye maple custom inlaid adjustable height table with ample bench seating for 4 people. The large windows utilize OCEANAIR drop-down blinds for limiting the outside light and utilizing the dimming 19 LED recessed overhead lights. A position adjustable overhead lamp with shade makes for easy reading and/or dining focused lighting.

Across from the dining table is a bench seating for three with an arm rest drawer console at the aft end and a television rising screen at the other.

HELM STATION

The Himalayan is not obtrusive to forward deck sight-lines. The STIDD custom adjustable leather seat, separate air conditioning ducts for seat and forward windows and surrounding mahogany cabinetry make for many hours of comfortable expeditioning.

The navigational electronics feature the 2017 RAYMARINE RAY gS series 15″ touch-screen radar / plotter overlay. Two CAT ECM electronic panels provide all the engine performance data needed. The HAMILTON jet control system and JOYSTICK control systems are at a comfortable palm reach away on starboard armrest.  GLENNDENING electronic clutches and throttle synching are an easy grab from a resting seated position. Rounding out the nav electronic are SIMRAD AP 24 autopilot, BENNETT port and starboard trim tabs, ICOM IC-M604 VHF, ST 70 RAYMARINE depth sounder and a 6″ RITCHIE Poweramp compass.

The Himalayan mounted switching controls for the forward, utility space, engine room, and lazarette bilges are easily activated. Featured on the next switching panel are the electronic parallel battery operations allowing port engine to house, engine to engine, starboard engine to house ganging. The MAXWELL windlass and ACR remote spotlight are next to the MATRIX tank master constant monitoring system.

The electrical 12v and 24v sub panels for boat movement functions are just to the right of the helm seat and behind clear glass doors.

NAVIGATOR STATION

This station opposite the helm enjoys the same sightlines and comforts as the captain in the same STIDD custom seating. The large flat chart table forward features a lift-up lid allowing for ample storage below of charts binoculars etc. The master control for cabin heat or air as well as the JVC music surround INFINITY music system are a left armrest touch.

GALLEY

The galley forward to port features 1″ thick custom cut Maine granite counter-top 36.5″ in height. The inlaid FORCE TEN 3-burner cook top handles the frying/boiling. Below this counter is a 22″ deep 20″ x 19″ cold plate freezer. A/C outlets abound around the 13″ x 18″ with 10″ deep stainless sink.

There are 4 above counter cabinets and 4 below counter cabinets and 4 drawers for all crockery.

The large two drawer SUB-ZERO Model 700BR refrigerator provides easy access and blends well with the mahogany decor matching facia.

The openness of this galley to the salon happenings and the opposite side office lounge / 2nd stateroom combines with the 19″ portlights and overhead hatch to create an inclusive, open environment.

SECOND STATEROOM

Opposite the galley to starboard is an office with 4 drawers and cabinets built-in. The access is via large multi-stop “pocket doors” that seal off this compartment.  Above the desk are large custom OCEAN PANEL electrical panels with red lighting to not intrude on the rest of the occupants when this space is converted to a stateroom. Separate MARINE AIR heat and a/c controls along with the 19″ port light keep the atmosphere comfortable. There are 7 recessed overhead LED variable lights and a wall mounted adjustable lamp with shade.

SECOND STATEROOM HEAD

This head is accessed directly from the second stateroom and from the master stateroom which can then create a his and hers head configuration when no guests are aboard. The custom vanity features a composite counter-top with a large 16″ by 8″ deep oval sink. There are 3 cabinets above counter and 2 cabinets below counter. The ensuite shower has a raised removable teak grating above the drain. The port light and overhead hatch provide ample natural lighting and air flow. There is a wall mirror next to the VACU-FLUSH head.

PORTSIDE HEAD

This compartment is easily accessed from the master head and features a separate shower with glass-door entry. The custom composite vanity counter-top is the same as the second stateroom head with the 3 mahogany above counter cabinets. Below the counter-top are a drawer and 2 cabinets. Next to the VACU-FLUSH head is a wall mirror and natural lighting and air flow is provided by the overhead hatch and large port light.

MASTER STATEROOM

The curly maple headboard provides the perfect accent to the mahogany cabinets and trim. The berth measures 54″ wide by 8′ long with abundant storage below. The overhead reading lights, flatscreen television, and music system controls are available from the sleeping position. The standing height of this compartment is 6′ 6″. The reverse MARINE AIR coupled with the 31″ x 31″ overhead hatch and 4-portlights make for open feel and plenty of air control options. The large 6-drawer mahogany storage and opposite side hanging locker provide clothing storage.

MECHANICAL

Ascending from the salon main hatch down 4-step ANTAL sliding rack-ladder you are ahead of the engines and have ample access to the raw-water sea strainer shut-off valves as well as the fuel manifolds. Standing room height 5″ 10″ is available on the centerline between both engines. All areas are very well lite revealing the splendid engine room execution that Lyman Morse is famous for.

WHAT OTHERS HAVE SAID ABOUT WHISTLER

“Maine’s Jet Set”

The action stopped and heads turned as we brought Whistler to the dock in Rockland, Maine, the day before the Maine Boat Show began last month. Whistler is made by Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding in Thomaston, just down the road from Rockland, and this 54-foot beauty would be a showstopper wherever it turned up.

Designed by C. Raymond Hunt Associates, Whistler boasts a performance to match the elegant sweep of its sheer line and its classic yet aggressive profile. For performance, we registered 36.7 knots on the GPS coming down the St. George River in a 15-knot wind with 1,000 pounds of fuel on board before we turned left at Port Clyde and headed up to Rockland. That’s a result of the Hunt state-of-the-art composite hull and the Hamilton water jets, driven by twin 1,000 hp Caterpillar C18 diesels. One notable innovation is the garage; push a button and the hydraulic gate lifts up on the transom and a sled extends over the jets so the owner can launch a 10-foot dinghy with ease.

The elegant interior is built for a couple, with a master in the bow and a study that converts to a guest cabin. The woodwork and hand-carved embellishments are exquisite. You can drive the boat using traditional controls, a joystick or a hand-size mouse for pinpoint docking. The jets mean only 2 feet 11 inches of draft. They also mean we didn’t have to worry about the lobster pots when coming in to the show. — Peter A. Janssen

Whistler was selected as Southern Boating’s Designer’s Choice in June 2008!
