Layout and Design

Jeff and Karen Hughes commissioned us to build their new Hood designed 63 footer based on the WINDWALKER type of hull, and also drawing on their experiences from sailing their Little Harbor 50. She was to accommodate their family in safety and comfort for extended cruising and also to be a competitive coastal and offshore racer. The Hughes chose a comfortable center cockpit layout with a low-profile, roomy pilothouse enclosure for ease of maneuverability. With her large master cabin aft, a well thought out main salon, an accommodating galley, and two double cabins forward, each with private head and shower combinations, she provides comfort afloat for a family of six. The Hughes plan to cruise Labrador and later Chile, after their initial Newport-Bermuda Race shakedown in June. The hull was constructed using the SCRIMP system over a male mold and vinylester resin. The elegant interior is the classic Herreshoff style of painted bulkheads and varnished mahogany trim with intricate beading along the perimeters of all doors and drawers. The deep hydro-dynamically shaped centerboard extends her 6.5′ shallow-draft to over 12′ enabling excellent upwind performance while minimizing wetted surface area when off the wind. A retractable hydraulic bow thruster provides ease of maneuverability in tight quarters. Her 84′ carbon fiber stowaway mast from GMT is fitted with a mainsail with vertical battens providing extra roach for better performance and ease in handling. All in all, AMELIA is one of the most sophisticated and beautiful yachts we have built to date. And our pride shows.
