Brooklin Boat
Yard, located in Center Harbor on Eggemoggin
Reach, is America’s Mecca of wooden boat construction and restoration.
Started in 1960 by Joel White, and now operated by Steve White, their new
main shop can accommodate boats up to 120 feet.
The majority of Brooklin Boat Yard’s new construction
projects are cold molded, vacuum bagged wood/composite laminates that
produce an exceptionally light and stiff hull. "One of our recent projects
was originally designed for aluminum construction," said White. "Our
design office was able to work with the naval architect to save weight and
money, and end up with a beautiful wooden boat built at Brooklin Boat
Yard."
Design Office
Brooklin Boat Yard’s design office is one of our great
assets. Some people believe we build only to our designs, however we are happy to work with other designers
and will even offer design and
engineering assistance. Principal designer Robert Stephens worked closely
with Joel White for many years. Major design projects include a 50' gaff cutter being built in Australia, a preliminary
for W-Class 37, and a cabin and interior for Rummary's
Boatyard completion of Holland 38 in the Bunker and Ellis style.
"Modern boat design can encompass traditional
elegance,"
believes Stephens. "One idea Joel and I shared was a philosophy of
construction as an expression of minimalism. We both thought, if you can
make something simpler, then you should do so. Although some of our most beautiful boats look like they might have been built in
the 1920s and 1930s, their construction techniques are thoroughly modern.
The W-Class boats are built from strip plank cedar, epoxy and carbon fiber
with a fin keel and skeg rudder. Building with wood has many advantages
over aluminum and man-made composites because of its insulating properties,
corrosion resistance, weight and expense.
