NAME: LYRA BUILDER: Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding
ACCOMMODATIONS AND LAYOUT
LYRA sleeps seven in a layout that is designed for offshore sailing and passage making. There is a double v-berth forward with a private head. The main salon sleeps four comfortably with port and starboard berths outboard and two settees that can be used as berths. Aft is a quarter berth on the starboard side that can be closed in and has another head attached amidships on the starboard side. The galley and navigation areas are on the port side with a dining table in the main salon forward. Cabin soles is teak and holly and furniture and cabinetry is varnished cherry and teak with the bulkheads and other structural members finished in white enamel. There is ample storage throughout.
DECK There is a spacious cockpit aft with Edson pedestal steering and a raised helmsman’s platform. A high quality dodger protects the main companionway from the weather and provides a solid handhold for getting in and out of the cockpit. The decks are teak throughout with the exception of the coach roof, which has a white nonskid finish. The cabin house and low bulwarks are nicely trimmed with bright work. There is a Maxwell-Nilsson electric windlass forward that handles both chain and line for ease of anchoring. All the winches are self-tailing from Lewmar and include 2 x 55 electric winches for the primaries and a 46 electric winch for the main halyard and utility winch. In addition there are 2 x 43 secondaries, 3 x 46 for halyards, 2 x 48s for reefing and a 43 in the cockpit as a utility winch.
GALLEY The galley is on the port side of the central area of the boat and features a double stainless steel sink to starboard and a large counter space to port. There is a Marine Regal from MSF three-burner gimbaled stove with oven. There is a refrigerator and freezer from Grunert that runs off of an engine driven compressor or AC shore power. The refrigeration section is in the galley while the large freezer is below a storage locker on the starboard side out of the main flow of the galley.
ELECTRONICS AND NAVIGATION EQUIPMENT LYRA has a truly impressive array of electronics and navigational equipment. She is capable of going anywhere in safety and multiple backups to major systems. The majority of the electronics on board are new this year and include the latest technology available. The electronics include:
CONSTRUCTION The hull, deck and interior bulkhead are a composite construction of fiberglass with Airex core material. All construction is ABS approved and built to the highest standards. Lyra was built with draft considerations and the lead keel is augmented with a centerboard for added performance. An innovative Delta board is located forward of the rudder to further improve the boats tracking ability.
SAILS AND RIGGING The Hall Spar mast reflects very advanced thinking for a yacht built in 1986. The swept spreader rig is very stable and only requires running backstays and inner forestays in rough conditions. The rigging is discontinuous rod rigging from Navtec and the boom vang and backstay controls are both Navtec hydraulics. There is a manual Reckmann headsail furler for cruising which can be easily removed for racing. The sloop rig has a headsail forward and three reef main. There is a second headstay that can be rigged, and a light wind seeker staysail that can also be used as a spinnaker staysail. The sail inventory from Doyle includes one mainsail, number 1, 2 and 3 racing headsails and the staysail. There is also a 100% cruising jib that is used on the roller furler.
MECHANICAL LYRA is equipped with a four cylinder Westerbeke 70 hp diesel engine with 2 blade Max-prop. The engine is freshwater cooled. The engine is located in a sound insulated box under the galley sink and has easy access on all sides. There are port and starboard fiberglass fuel tanks of 55 gallons each that are integral to the hull. The water system includes two 100-gallon integral fiberglass tanks and Jabsco pressure pump. There is an Allcraft 12-volt water heater that feeds the galley and both heads. A Hi-Seas diesel fired space heater in the main salon area does a wonderful job of heating the entire interior.
REMARKS LYRA was built by Lyman Morse and has been kept in immaculate condition. The interior layout and functioning of the yacht include many of the initial owner’s suggestions from his many years of cruising and racing and his personal touch is seen in many areas. The current owner has made many upgrades. LYRA sails very well and is a competitive offshore racer as well as a comfortable and fast cruiser. The yacht is built to the highest standards and is safe and comfortable to take anywhere in the world. |
