AXEL D was launched by Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding Co in June of 1995. The owner worked closely with C. Raymond Hunt Associates
throughout the project to design a boat that was carefully tailored to their own specifications.
Layout and DesignAXEL D has three staterooms forward with a head for each cabin. The forward stateroom is for their young son and the master cabin is full width with large berths port and starboard. The master cabin head has a full bathtub with Vacuflush heads. The guest stateroom is a over-under berth arrangement to consolidate space and has its own head across the hallway.
The large main cabin has both the galley and saloon allowing the cook to fully participate in the social activities. The counters are all Corian with customized Corian trim. The builders careful attention to detail enhances the functionality and aesthetic of all cabinetry. The saloon has a large L-shaped settee around the table on the port side and a bench on the starboard side. The aft bulkhead is laid out with a Luke fireplace and full entertainment center.
The entire interior is white pickled oak covered with a water base varnish to keep the transparent effect of oak grain and stain.
The aft cockpit has Marquipt hydraulic crane to lift a 16 ft. Donzi onto its chocks. The cockpit also has large engine hatches on air struts to allow secondary access to the engine room. Normal access to the engine room is through a watertight Freeman door situated between the auxiliary engine room which also houses a washer, dryer, and laundry sink as well as other equipment.
There is one helm station on the fly-bridge which is enclosed with glass and has a large sitting area with table. A 'dumbwaiter" allows easy access for the cook. A fully integrated Raytheon electronics system has been used for navigation.
The North End Marine molded hull of fiberglass over foam core is much quieter through the water than uncovered hulls.
Quiet was important to the owner and AXEL D uses two 550 hp 3406 Caterpillars, set way back aft and spin the props through ZF BW160 2:1 V-drives. Liberal sound insulation and careful engine mounting result in a saloon as quiet as the cockpit of a luxury sport coupe at full throttle - 75dba. The exhaust system is Soundown designed for quiet running exiting out the aft quarter. She is swinging 32 x 30 Hall & Stavert five bladed propellers that drive her at a top speed of 23 knots and a cruising speed of 18 knots.
