Te Mana
Sold - $1,150,000

Launched in summer 2005, Te Mana is a custom design based upon C W Paine's fast sailing, Bouganvillea series. When inspecting the boat, the main tenants in design become evident. Fast, easily sailed by two, incredible pilothouse views, quiet, bomb-proof, commercial engine, walkability on decks and below, and easy deployment of an oversized tender. Te Mana is arguably the nicest boat that Kanter Yachts of Ontario, Canada has ever built. Her fit and finish exceed what had been demanded by other owners and she was modified with innummerable upgrading of original equipment specifications. It was no wonder that Cruising World Magazine voted her BOAT OF THE YEAR in 2005. Since then, Te Mana has been sailed extensively, from The Canadan Maritimes to the Caribbean. She motors at a diesel sipping 3.3 nmpg at 8.5 knots and excels in windward ability under sail. Enjoy watching the miles roll away (220+ mile days) from the expansive views of the large pilot house or quietly survey the harbor from it's comfortable settees and luxurious appointments.

Layout and Design

Deck

The deck is strong and features a spacious cockpit that eliminates all the bending and twisting associated with living on most sailboats under 20 meters. It is painted white with light grey non skid, all new in 2010. From the transom passerelle, one can walk directly into the large cockpit, no need to step over a coaming or around anything. There is also a straight path into the pilothouse as the varnished teak cockpit dining table is offset with folding leaves and gives unrestricted passage through the cockpit to the pilothouse entrance. Without the drop leaves, the table seats four, and with the hinged leaves in place, it seats 6 comfortably. Twin wheels enable the helmsman to see forward outboard of the pilothouse. An opening between the two helming stations also permits easy access to the stern bathing/dinghy boarding platform. No less than eleven cockpit lockers are fitted for access to stowage beneath the cockpit seats and to the huge full width lazarette, which is additionally accessed by the twin doors from the stern scoop.

There are 360 degree views from the pilothouse with forward and side windows and aft window in and on either side of the entry door. There are eight overhead hatches for natural ventilation when the air conditioning is not in use. A very large anchor handling platform is engineered to carry two oversized large anchors permanently mounted and always ready if needed.

Transom

Te Mana's sugar scoop transom makes a good docking station for a 14' tender which is carried on a custom hydraulic arch/davit. Deploying or retrieving the dinghy is a pushbutton operation that efficiently handles the tender and outboard without using cables and multiple lift motors. It features two large watertight access doors to the aft lazarette. Currently the lazarette holds three bicycles, a spare tender with motor and BBQ grill on one side. The other side is devoted to spare parts and maintenance supplies, dive gear and a compressor. A hot and cold shower turns the transom into a bathing platform.  Courtesy tender docking lights are located on the underside of the arch.

Engine and Mechanical

The impressive engine room features stand-up head room, storage, workbench and watertight bulkheads. Spotless soles are powder coated white and are removable.

Te Mana is quiet under power. Extra insulation keeps noise levels very low, producing 67 db at idle and 72 db at cruise. The engine room design was taken from 100' yachts with the main engine, generator and all major systems housed in one area. The organized design also groups fuel, water and electrical systems accordingly. There is a large primary exhaust fan (Delta T system) and an independent backup fan. The heavy duty commercial diesel main engine operates at lower rpm's than lower displacement turbo marine diesels, therefore more efficienciently, with up to 2,100 mile motoring range at 8 knots. At higher rpm'sTe Mana will reach her 10 knot maximum hull speed.

Te Mana is air conditioned for the tropics with chilled water system (2 chillers and 4 air handlers).

The large generator is positioned at the aft end of the engine room to starboard. A hinge-up workbench is provided above the genset. System back ups abound.

Interior

The Interior of Te Mana is marked by a bright and airy feel. The 8 opening hatches offer ventilation and are also fitted with blinds and screens. The contemporary styling was achieved using high gloss Anegre wood throughout, along with stainless, polished granites, designer fabrics and custom lighting. The overhead is comprised of panels covered in light off-white ultrasuede with varnished battens of anegre. The interior sole is a non-slip, non-scratching, non-denting, faux teak and holly.

While at sea, the pilothouse serves as a watch station. Full repeating instrumentation is mounted in a panel located outboard of the starboard settee. A small desk with drawer is located forward of that setttee. Lower the TV monitor and a large chart flat presents itself. When at anchor, the navigational aids fold down, out of eye sight, giving the pilothouse more of a proper saloon feel. The large expanses of glass in the pilothouse give a seamless, panaoramic view.  All windows are fitted with accordian style Ocean Aire blinds for privacy and shade. Walk into the pilot house, and a wet locker is immediately located under the companionway. 4 large opening hatches and the dutch-style pilothouse door give good breezes.  Storage is located outboard of the port settee and aft of it. Designer Comments

The Kanter 65 pilothouse was launched in early summer 2005 at the Kanter yard in St. Thomas, Ontario. Te Mana offers motor yacht luxury and living space while preserving superb sailing qualities. The size of the pilothouse is similar to the Swan 100 and 112. Designed by Mark Fitzgerald, then head designer for Chuck Paine Yacht Design in Camden, ME. Mark said "The clients came to Chuck Paine Yacht Design with very clear and detailed ideas of the features and parameters they wanted in their boat. It became obvious to us that it would not be too difficult to honor their wishes and incorporate them into the first 65 footer of our Bermuda series. What we've ended up with is perhaps a new level in performance cruising design, I am very excited about Te Mana."

Essential design criteria for Te Mana were that she could be sailed, docked and comfortably maintained by a couple (every system is accessible); and go anywhere in the world without crew in an exceptionally strong, safe design with excellent performance. After commissioning and sea trials, Te Mana's owners sailed her 3500 miles with the benefit of hydraulic genoa furling and winches, bow and stern thrusters, and a custom 14' tender/arch dinghy lift. The stand up engine room with all the ship's primary machinery and systems eliminates the need to remove any cabin soles or joinery to service equipment. A bow and retractable stern thruster facilitate docking in any conditions for the cruising couple/owners, making additional crew unnecessary.

The owners elected a custom design in aluminum in search of high performance, longevity and bullet proof strength. Her close longitudinal and frame spacing, combined with extra thick aluminum plating, provides incomparable hull strength that exceeds any offshore cruising yacht her size. The unencumbered cockpit can be entered with none of the "hopping in and out of a bucket" style seating that is common with traditional designs. Eliminating the sunken footwell also results in a full beam, full headroom, master stateroom beneath. The fully air conditioned, higher overhead interior has a spacious feel, and the view from the pilothouse/main saloon is nothing short of spectacular.

With LOA of 65'0", LWL of 56'6" and beam of 16'10", Te Mana affords a maximum of interior volume, while remaining true to the Bermuda series' essence - comfort, safety and speed. Her rugged aluminum hull features a sugar scoop transom with 2 watertight transom doors to access the commodious aft lazarette storage area. Additional storage is located forward in the full height, watertight, fo'c'sle. There are multiple watertight bulkheads including one forward reinforced with vertical and transverse beams.

The cutter rig is 86' off the waterline and incorporates a large genoa. A roller furled staysail of small size is there to carry on in blustery conditions. Te Mana uses the latest refinement of Paine's proven shoal draft bulbed keel, offering the potential for excellent windward performance with a moderate draft at 7'7".

Te Mana has been sailed extensively from the Canadian Maritimes to the Caribbean. Her efficient engine offers a 3.5 nmpg at 8.3 knots. Her sailing ability on all points of sail is impressive. Enjoy watching the miles roll away, including many 220+ mile days, from the expansive view of the large pilothouse.

The Te Mana design was developed from a slightly smaller, very successful Paine design. On deck she was extended 2'; the beam was increased by 6" and 1 1/2" added to the waterline. In addition, the pilothouse configuration was chosen. The final design was 30% larger to accommodate the buyer design objectives for a fast, spacious design that offers many features only available in much larger designs.
