Whitehawk - Bruce King

Styled after the famous Herreshoff racing vessel Ticonderoga, the 105’ Whitehawk was designed by renowned Maine yacht designer Bruce King and commissioned in 1978.  She was built in Rockland, Maine and returned to her home for a major overhaul in the winter of 2010-11 a refit here at Lyman-Morse.  With her sleek, traditional lines and impeccable detailing, Whitehawk is a spectacular showcase for fine Maine craftsmanship.

We were extremely pleased to have had the opportunity to work on this magnificent vessel and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her crew.  The project involved almost 6000 hours to complete – the bulk of which was put towards replacing the teak decks.

The crew at Lyman-Morse removed all of the deck hardware (over 175 major hardware pieces).  We removed the old teak deck (with routers, power planes and chisels) and faired the sub-deck with epoxy.  The crew Installed new teak on weather deck, coach roof forward dog house, cockpit sole and seats on the entire boat. Teak Decking Systems produced the deck panels and installed the deck.  Decks were installed using vacuum bags, using almost no screws.  We reinstalled all hardware, Installed new winches and winch control buttons.

The Plexiglas hatch lenses with new Decorative tempered glass were installed and we replaced all hardware bases with new teak or painted mahogany.  The team replaced all deck hardware fastenings and rebuilt 3 deck hatches.  The project also included centerboard modifications, improving the foil shape of the board and the bearing system.

The job also required that we replace one fiberglass fuel tank and repair one fresh water tank.  We replaced old head system in two cabins, replaced black one water tank and all sanitation hose.  The metal fabricators Fabricated and install new bronze sail track.  The mechanics installed a new shaft, strut, and bearings and Installed new bow thruster hydraulic lines.  We also repaired a variety of joinery items on the interior and serviced a variety of minor mechanical items.

Whitehawk set out for Newport in the late spring looking as beautiful as the day she was launched.
