A rendezvous of boats fills Penobscot Bay

Boatyards in Camden and Thomaston hosted a three-day boating extravaganza, the first-ever Penobscot Bay Rendezvous, Aug. 18-21, filling harbors and sidewalks with sailors.

The Rendezvous was organized by Wayfarer Marine, of Camden, and Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding, of Thomaston, and represented the first year of what is to be an annual event celebrating power and sailboats, their design and construction.

All manner of boats, from super yachts to classics to performance racers, as well as picnic boats and lobster yachts, arrived for the weekend regatta to celebrate boating and boatbuilding. The Rendezvous featured daily sailboat races for sailboats and power boat events. Wayfarer Marine and Lyman-Morse added lobster bakes, barbecues, dancing and fireworks to the mix. Parties were held at Lyman-Morse, at the Camden Yacht Club (hosted with style by Cellardoor Winery and Megunticook Market), and at Wayfarer Marine, and the importance of Maine's connection to the ocean was emphasized with free showing of Northeast Historic Film's documentary "In Our Wake" at Camden Public Library.

The weekend ended Sunday with awards, weary but happy captains and crew, and toasts to the "PBR" with "PBR" (Pabst Blue Ribbon). The races, double-handed and cruising canvas, kept sailors occupied for several days, under a variety of conditions.

On Saturday and Sunday, racing was fast and furious, thanks to strong offshore breezes, up to 20 knots, while a fluctuating bank of fog helped to keep things challenging for the competing boats as they variously raced from Rockland to Camden, from Camden to Islesboro, and on an "Olympic Course" on the bay. Meanwhile, power boaters pursued cards in a poker run and specific scenes for a photo pursuit.

More than 50 boats participated, as visitors and locals gathered on the water, and at various spots after dusk, to enjoy messing about in boats.
